Alice Smith Hopkins (Deceased)

 January 21, 1922----November 18, 2003

Services for Alice M. Hopkins, 81, were November 21 at Riverside Baptist Church, rural Tekamah.  She died November 18, 2003 at the Burgess Health Center in Onawa, IA.

She was born January 21, 1922 on a farm north of Blair to Earl and Ruth (Elliott) Smith.  She attended school around Decatur and was often brought to school by her Dad in a wagon pulled by a team of horses.  She graduated from Decatur High School in 1939.

July 17, 1942, she married James F. Hopkins at Fahmouth, MA, two weeks before he was shipped overseas to serve in the military during World War II.  During the war, Mrs. Hopkins lived in Omaha with his mother and worked at a parachute factory and made gun stock stain.

Following his discharge, they lived on different farms until settling west of Decatur.  After retirement, they moved into Decatur.  In July of 2003, they celebrated 61 years of marriage.

Mrs. Hopkins was a Seamstress.  She sewed for many people in the area and made quilts, many of which were sent out of state.

She was a member of Riverside Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of Decatur; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Art Mitchell of Craig and Linda and Frank Holiday of Decatur; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Phyllis Smith and Ed and Darlene Smith, all of Decatur; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

Rev. Steven P. Eggum officiated the service.  Sandy Hennig was organist.

Pallbearers were Scott Smith, Keith Smith, Roger Smith, Calvin Mitchell, Robert Holiday and Lee Holiday.

Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery, Decatur.
