Lewis Leroy Snyder Obituary

TORRINGTON, WYOMING...........Funeral services for LEWIS LEROY SNYDER, 95, will be held at 2pm Friday, March 22, 2019 at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church with Reverend Bruce McBurney officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Valley View Cemetery. Lewis died March 18, 2019 at the West Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Memorials may be given to the VFW Relief Fund. Visitation will be on Thursday at the funeral home from 3pm to 5pm and the casket will be open briefly prior to the service at the church. 

Lewis was born September 17, 1923 on the family farm six miles west of Decatur, Nebraska to Charlie and Mary Alpha (Fuller) Snyder. He attended a country school through the eighth grade and then graduated from Decatur High School. He spent his summers working in Goshen County Wyoming. After graduation he joined the Army and served with the 94th General Hospital in England, France and Belgium. He returned to the states in 1945 and was stationed at Fort Brooks Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. He met Alma Grace Barnett there and they were married February 14, 1947. He was discharged April 31, 1947 and they lived in Decatur until April 1950 when they moved to Torrington, Wyoming. Lewis worked for Everett Anderson until 1964 when he went to work for Stroud’s Grocery until January of 1970. He ran Snyder’s Grocery until 1979 and then worked at the experiment farm for four years.  Lewis was a life member of VFW Post 2918, a forty-five year member of the American Legion and was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Lewis is survived by his wife Alma Grace Snyder; a daughter Anita Gail; a grandson Patrick (Jackie) Godfrey; granddaughter Tamsen Godfrey; step-granddaughters Deborah (Steve) Pike, Wanda (Rick) Hammond, Bonnie Duncan and Darla Duncan; ten great grandchildren; and 18 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Karen Lee Godfrey; a step-daughter Sandra Jean Duncan; a grandson Benny Lee Duncan; four brothers George, Elmer, John and Sam; a sister Caroline; and an infant sister.
